User modes are special server-side settings that you can enable or disable for yourself. Different user modes do different things, and they may change your chatting experience on IRC. User modes are signified by a single letter that is case sensitive (For example, "Z" or "D").

User modes can only be set by you or the IRC server, and usually cannot be set by anybody else. User modes will only affect you, so they won't affect other users. Also, user modes are session-specific, so if you get disconnected, all your user modes will be reset.

Setting user modes[edit]

In most cases, user modes can be set simply by typing in /mode <your current nickname> <user mode changes>.
